Janet Shanberge, Director
Janet Shanberge's 27-year career has paralleled China's near 3-decade economic opening and expansion.
Today, she believes much has changed in the way business is conducted, yet much remains the same:
"China's economy has become more rules-based and more sophisticated,
but it retains its 'Chinese characteristics'. Today, rigorous market research and fact-based
strategies are pre-requisites for success, but relationships, communication and follow-through are still
critical."
Throughout her career, Janet has emphasized strategic planning that culminates in actionable strategies. At Chase Manhattan Bank in the 1980s -- the early-stages of China's market reforms -- Janet was involved in the planning and execution of strategies leading to several precedent-setting joint ventures. She formed Alliance Asia Pacific Limited (AAP) in 1991 to advise foreign investors on China business development, merging AAP with the international advisory group LEK Consulting in 2000. Janet became a partner in LEK and the first Managing Director of LEK's China practice, located in Shanghai. Janet was twice elected governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, the largest international AmCham chapter in the world. She is also a Senior Lecturer at the MIT-Sloan School of Management.
Janet has led projects covering a broad range of China's industry sectors. These sectors include food processing, logistics, retailing, advertising, fast-moving consumer goods, entertainment, travel and tourism among many others. She has witnessed China move from a minor and optional market for international business to a central priority. But she believes the the keys to success haven't changed:
"China has emerged as an essential market for competitive companies
to 'get right'. It is as vast as it is different. At Ascend, we are committed to assisting
businesses to first, develop effective strategies for China and second, to implement and
execute the strategies."
